Maine GOP Lawmaker Proposes Major DEP Changes

Now that Darryl Brown has been confirmed commissioner of the DEP, at least one Republican lawmaker would like to give him the ability to appoint 13 directors of divisions that oversee regulations in the department. These are management positions that have traditionally been held by employees who came up through the DEP ranks. Sen. Tom Saviello says his bill would give the agency more flexibility. But there are concerns that it will politicize the department instead
